Jackie and Tom have always really loved kids. And not necessarily our own! (you have to be a parent to understand this humor) Beyond compassion for all other human beings, to us (as with many people) there was always something ‘extra-special’ about caring for children. As we enter our empty nester years, we often talked about ‘what is the next step?’ How can we share the love of God in a real and concrete way to the most vulnerable in a world that is increasingly unkind? We talked about possibly starting an orphanage in different countries around the world (and may still be able to do this!) but we realized we needed to start with one. Our church has been going to Guatemala for mission work for years and after joining those trips we were able to see the great need there. The stories of child abandonment, human trafficking and mortality are heartbreaking. Hearing about Government run orphanages housing hundreds of children with little human care and contact (in 2017 41 children died in a fire in one of them) inspired us to start an orphanage there. With A LOT of help and support from our church (Seattle Community Church), family and friends and Divine providence, we have purchased property October 2019 and have received government licensure. Our hope is that we can raise and educate these children one precious soul at a time.
Immanuel Children’s Foundation supports the Immanuel Hogar para Niños (Immanuel Home for Children) orphanage in Guatemala. Eventually we would like to start a school to educate not only the children in the home but also those in the surrounding villages who do not have the opportunity of even basic education. Our vision is to provide for children around the world in whatever capacity the Foundation is able. Immanuel means “God with us”. We hope to be God’s hands and feet to the needy children of the world.
